Today I was astonished to get the following email. Astonished not because of the sender, or even the topic. I was astonished because of the tone:

Now since a reply will not go through (I even tried - having the response returned to me by their Spam Firewall) I submit my reply to all of you:
Dear President Obama (or who ever might read this, if it’s even read),
We will not back down? Do you mean we will not back down any more than we (you) already have? Because you seem to have backed down on the public option. You seem to have backed down on any meaningful reform already which will curb the high profits taken by health insurance companies at the cost of the sick. You seem to have already backed down to individual senators from sparsely populated states and the so-called moderates in our party. I hate to compare you to our previous president, but where is your conviction to stand for what you believe is right? President Bush had no problem fighting for what he believed in, no matter how many people it ultimately hurt. How can the political pendulum swing the other way and correct the damages of the past when you’re just shooting for the middle and compromise? The compromise choice is hardly ever the right choice. Stand for what you believe is right.
We have not come too far - we have actually not come far enough! We need overwhelming reform to really make a difference in health care and until you prove that we’re not aiming for mediocrity, I cannot give you any more dollars than I already have to get you elected in the first place. (I’ll need them all, after all, to pay for my health care.) Then, and only then, will I again fight alongside you because until then, it will mean I must retreat from my current position to fight a war of mediocrity alongside you.
Respectfully,
Jim Hutchings
Does someone running the email list at barackobama.com really think a lot of progress has been made? Maybe I’m missing something, but this seems like a lot of smoke and mirrors to me.
