Rep Alan Grayson (D-Florida, 8th District):
“The American Journal of Public Health (a peer-reviewed journal) announced that 44,789 Americans die every single year because they have no health insurance.” … “Now I’m sure that if we learned that Al Qaeda was going to launch an attack on the United States and kill 44,789 Americans at any time next year, I’m sure that we would do anything in our power to prevent that. I submit to you that we should the same about this. We should do exactly the same here because we face the same threat.”
For each Republican House member (they’re all opposed to health reform), he then read the projected number of people who will die in their district next year because they don’t have insurance.
Until, that is, Rep. Phil Gingrey (R-Ga.) called for a procedural motion leading to adjournment. But when the House reconvened, Grayson continued naming Republican representatives and the dead in their districts.
